We asked you - the OSM industry - and you told us to… Develop training provider capability

When we asked workers in the Offsite Manufacturing (OSM) industry about their experience – the good, the bad, and the ugly – the survey results revealed some key challenge areas. This is the first in a series of news items summarising these key themes.

You told us that the sector needs to…Develop training provider capability (Theme 1).

Well, this is what was actually said…

  • Trick is to get polytechs and universities to work together in order to drive innovations and use offsite as a solution..

  • Knowledge doesn’t get shared because of its inherent commercial value. Hence progress is slow.

  • There is a disconnect between the skills needed and the experience of the new people coming into the industry.

  • Degrees for professionals need to include work placements and/or longer work placements to understand the sector.

  • Increasingly, we need to get more people with greater cross-skills, understanding and multidisciplinary knowledge.

  • Ideally, we should be looking for micro-credentials in the skills needed by the OSM sector.

  • Capability of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) amongst architects and architectural designers lacking.  DFMA needs to be put in at an early stage.

Generally, respondents were positive about working in the offsite industry but also realistic about the challenges ahead to achieve a bright future. OffsiteNZ is looking forward launching an Action Plan and working with the sector, and Government, to grow the industry and overcome the challenges.

Still to come in this series are thoughts from the workforce on the following themes:

2.       defining and promoting careers in OSM

3.       supply chain

4.       future products and opportunities

5.       current market policy.
